With best wishes from Al Gore, the 60th annual congress of CELC – the European Confederation of Flax and Hemp – took place in Strasbourg, France, from November 4-7 2009. Bringing together players working at all stages of the flax/linen supply chain – from plant to fabric – CELC has 10,000 member companies in 14 countries and devotes a hefty 9.5% of its budget to research and development.
The best soils for growing flax are mainly to be found in France, Belgium and the Netherlands, in an area totalling some 75,000 hectares.France produces an annual 100,000 tonnes of flax, Belgium 23,000 tonnes and the Netherlands 6,000 tonnes. The fibres are then spun into an annual 22,000 tonnes of diversified yarns by around fifteen companies in Italy, France, Northern Ireland, Belgium, Austria and Germany. The yearly value of the industry is put at €240 million for fibres and by-products and €200 million for yarn.
