New flax composites family launch |

A new family of flax-based materials called Biotex was launched at Composites Europe in Stuttgart, Germany, from October 27-29, by Composites Evolution, based in Chesterfield, UK. The Biotex-branded commingled flax/PP, commingled flax/PLA and flax yarns, fabrics and preconsolidated sheets are manufactured by a new twistless technology. This is said to provide the high levels of performance and processability normally associated with glass reinforced materials.Although natural fibres are already being used to reinforce conventional plastics, for example in injection moulded or press moulded interior parts for the automotive industry, the natural fibres are generally short and randomly oriented, resulting relatively low mechanical properties.
