The Portuguese government is backing a new €1.27 million research programme to develop new composites for the aeronautics industry based on cork. The consortium involved in the Aerocork project comprises aircraft company Dyn’Aero Ibérica, Amorim Cork Composites, the University of Minho’s [Innovation in Polymer Engineering (PIEP) and CAD developer ActiveSpace Technologies (AST)].
Agglomerated cork is one of the most promising alternatives for replacing synthetic materials used in sandwich panels that are fundamental for guaranteeing the structural integrity of a plane.
